Telecommunication Translations: The Quiet Chinese Expansion

The daily business sections are dominated by news from well-known companies, issues of politics, economics and market speculation. This means that the majority of articles focus on the European, American and the Chinese market. Recently, the key questions seem to be how to protect domestic companies from China or how to aid companies in penetrating the Chinese market. While both of these questions are important, reports are infrequently reporting on the quietly executed international expansion of Chinese companies.

A prime example of the relative disregard of Chinese companies in western media coverage is the mobile telecommunication industry. Any sort of news or speculation related to Apple and Samsung is sure to be headline news. Yet news from emerging Chinese companies, such as Huawei and ZTE, despite their steadily increasing international profile and market share, is rarely given the same amount of attention.

Some Background

Huawei is the largest telecommunication equipment maker in the world. The company works with almost all of the top 50 telecom operators globally. In addition, Huawei operates 21 research and development centers. Zhongxing Telecommunication Equipment Corporation, or ZTE, is one of the top 5 smartphone makers in China and among the top 10 worldwide.

In recent months, Huawei has launched an acquisition campaign to expand its presence in Europe. Huawei purchased UK-based cloud-networking “Internet of Things” company Neul and simultaneously invested another €1.5 billion in France in order to strengthen existing relationships, aid in smartphone development, and support France’s startup sector. At the same time, ZTE is working to strengthen its presence in the emerging markets of Africa and the Middle East while also expanding its product line in North America.

Compared to the release of the newest iPhone 6, these ventures received very little public attention- However they will do much more to reshape the global telecommunications industry than the release of a single company’s annual device update.
