Chauvinism actually originates from the French soldier Nicolas Chauvin who is said to have performed amazing feats for France on the battlefield in the early 1800s. Chauvisim is an interesting word whose meaning has changed over the years. Its initial meaning was patriotic or “nationalistic”, but since the 1960s it has been used to refer to males.
