Pistol

The word pistol was introduced to England in the late 16th century. Many believe it took its name from Pistoia, an Italian city famous for the manufacture of hand guns designed to be fired while on horseback. Originally a single shot weapon, the pistol has evolved into semi-automatic and automatic versions capable of causing massive, sustained damage. Shakespeare describes Mistress Quickly as pistol-proof, able to withstand at least 2 bullets. In those days the guns were not as effective as today. Key manufacturers include Smith & Wesson, Beretta and Mauser.

Perhaps this was in the thoughts of the Sex Pistols when they took their name in 1975. The most influential band of the 1970s punk uprising openly attacked established culture at every opportunity. Like many anti-establishment icons, the band’s lead singer Johnny Rotten became less threatening with age. Many punk veterans were amused to see him advertising Country Life Butter in a 2008 TV commercial. On this occasion, the pistol was safely back in its holster.
