Callanetics

A simple and clear origin here! The word goes back exactly 30 years to a book entitled Callanetics: ten years younger in ten hours written by Callan Pinckney. The word is a mixture of athletics and Callan. The person who originated the craze was born in Savannah Georgia. After travelling round the world for 11 years, she came back to the United States more or less a physical wreck. To heal herself and to earn money she started teaching exercise and was very successful.

She then put what had only been teaching into her book which became the most popular exercise book ever written. Over the next twenty years she published 8 more books with Callenetics in the title, showing how to gain ten years by improving back, stomach and hips. They were bestsellers, selling some 6 million copies. And her video release made it to the No. 1 spot of all fitness videos. And this was of course followed by DVDs of the book and the exercising.

Based originally on ballet, the workout form focuses on tuning the body without putting any strain on the back. At the same time it improves muscle and posture. But the word seems to have gone out of fashion as the exercises which go with it. Callan Pinckney died back home in Savannah in 2012 and much of her sport with her.
