In a 72-second clip borrowing the famous intro from cult German series Tatort, the annual GALA Conference has released the first details of 2019’s event of the year for the translation and localization industry: the 2019 GALA Conference will take place in Munich March 24–27! Let’s first take a quick look back on three auspicious days at the 2018 GALA Conference in Boston this past March. Despite the snowstorm, all the attendees arrived unscathed – nothing could interfere with this discussion of new trends in the localization industry.
This year, cutting-edge presentations and interactive workshops were once again provided by the host, the Globalization and Localization Association. What made this special was the use of numerous real-life examples to share new knowledge and enhance existing knowledge. For the team from EVS Translations USA, the networking session discussing turnover in the translation industry was particularly interesting, as were the tips on how to accurately assess voiceover project requirements based on a few key questions.
The topic of automated language services was a central theme of the event. Exhibitors presented their nearly fully automated language and translation services – including some that dispense with human intervention altogether. At times, this gave the event a futuristic and sterile atmosphere. It is hard to hold this against the companies, though. The time and cost pressure is high, and no one wants come across as lagging behind in terms of technology. Having said this, we are excited to see how the translation industry develops this year and look forward to the 11th annual GALA conference in Munich.
