Public viewing in Germany

Quite popular in the last few weeks due to the FIFA World Cup have been gatherings to watch the soccer matches being held in Brazil. Giant screens are put in central locations for the public to watch the teams playing. Public viewing for sports events is very popular in Germany, with sometimes tens of thousands of people gathering to watch a big match together – and also called (das) Public Viewing in German. The Fanmeile (fan mile) in Berlin can be up to 4,000 metres long and can accommodate up to 100,000 soccer fans all cheering on their favorite team. But when the German soccer teams plays, there are numerous public viewing places – from soccer stadiums to city centres. And it is impossible to convince any of those watching that public viewing is not a normal English phrase.

Public viewing in England

Of course, it is, but term public viewing in English refers to an open day for visiting public buildings such as educational institutions or the lying in repose of a deceased person.
